SYNOPSIS
What if some of the bravest men during the First World War were forgotten; simply because they wore dresses and coattails, instead of fatigues and firearms? This documentary celebrates the unsung heroes of the trenches: the musicians, artists, actors and female impersonators who performed for soldiers on the front.

With compelling interviews, archival footage and comedic re-creations starring famous stage actors, we’ll explore how the subversive spirit of The Dumbells laid the groundwork for today’s vibrant drag culture and dark Canadian comedy. Using humour as a form of rebellion, these men challenged societal norms and empowered diverse voices within the Canadian performance scene – all while being shot at. Even though a century has passed since The Dumbells took their first bow, their influence can be directly traced throughout modern Canadian culture – from Kids in the Hall to RuPaul’s Drag Race.

This is a celebration of the creators and the dreamers, the people who make art to transport audiences to a happier, safer place.
